Overview
The first Vinbrite wine filter was originated way back in 1966. Over the years, this filter kit has constantly been updated to keep at the forefront of home wine filtration. As we have for some time been researching new filter media, the Vinbrite filter kit has now been slightly modified to include certain changes that will considerably increase its performance. As a result, we have now achieved a much faster flow rate whilst also producing an increased throughput of filtered wine. This has been the result of constant research into new filter media and the inclusion of a venting system for the filter body.
There are 3 types of pad available for the Vinbrite Filter Kit:
- CRYSTALBRITE PADS: Crystalbrite are premium grade technical pads offering excellent clarity and faster flow rates. They are part of a system of pads that are available for the Vinbrite Filter. The performance of the pad can be improved by first passing your wine through a coarse grade Prime Pad. This will improve flow rates and extend the life of the Crystalbrite Pad. Fit the pad as per the filter instruction.
- FILTABRITE PADS: These pads must be fitted with the smoother patterned side facing the locking ring (rougher crater looking side facing inside the Filter Body). As this pad is thicker, there is no need to fit the Support Disc but do ensure that the Locking Ring is fully tightened against the pad using a Vinbrite spanner. Filtabrite are fine grade pads, offering excellent value. They are specifically designed to filter wines slowly, maximising the time that wine is in contact with the pad. The longer wait will be rewarded with the highest clarity in your finished wines. They are part of a system of pads that are available for the Vinbrite Filter, and are particularly effective when filtering pre-fined wines. The performance of the pad can be improved by first passing your wine through the coarse grade Prime Pad. This will improve flow rates and extend the life of the Filtabrite Pad.
- PRIME PADS: Fit the filter pads according to the Vinbrite Filter instruction. Prime Pads are a coarse grade pretreatment pad and are part of a system of pads that are available for the Vinbrite Filter. They will enhance the overall performance of your Filter by removing larger solids and colloidal particles that may block finer filter pads. You may not notice significant differences in the clarity of your wine after passing through the Prime Pad, but the subsequent flow rate and performance of Filtabrite or Crystalbrite Pads will be improved. Prime Pads can also be used to filter a spirit wash prior to distillation. This will ensure a cleaner wash and reduce flavours carried over from the distillation process. The Vinbrite instruction express that winemakers make sure that fermentation is completed before filtering.
Whenever gas bubbles are seen rising in the transfer tube, this indicates that the wine is still working. In such cases, filtering should be stopped and the wine ferment out completely. However, winemakers are often impatient and will frequently try to filter unstable wines. When filtering and handling wine in general, minute gas bubbles may be released as the wine is disturbed resulting in a back pressure build-up in the filter body, which can also affect performance. The revised filter kit has now been designed to enable the winemaker to release any trapped air whilst filtering via the vent tube and tap.The updating of this unique filter kit will keep the Vinbrite to the forefront of home wine filtration and will enable winemakers to filter wine more quickly to professional standards.
